Chapter Four

In the distance, saguaros stood like sentries. The desert scenery was a shadowy backdrop in the moonlit night. Crickets chirped and the Jeep’s radio continued to belt out one country Christmas carol after another. Water continued to spill into the hot spring, a haze of steam wafting from its surface.

Both naked, Dean stood facing Lori. The waves they had previously churned inside the small pool were calm around their knees, but the turmoil inside him continued to rage. In the parking lot of the Hillside bar, he had unprotected sex with Lori. Without thinking past his cock, he was about to screw up once again.

She stopped on the top step of the stone tub and looked defiantly down at him. “We don’t have anything to say to each other.” She moved briskly down the steps. When her feet touched the sandy ground, she headed toward the Jeep. He followed behind her, stopping when his warm flesh met the chilly air.

Fuck. It was cold. He stubbed his toe on the rocky surface. Pain splintered through his foot.

Tree branches swayed, their leaves rustling in the breeze. The strong aroma of greasewoods almost overwhelmed the soft scent of the woman running away from him. He couldn’t let her go—not this time.

A sudden pain burrowing into the bottom of his foot made him jump and then crow hop. He reached down and dug out the pebble embedded in his instep as Lori reached the Jeep.

With a quick spin on the balls of her feet, she faced him. “Let’s just forget about tonight.” Angry tears swam in her eyes. Water beaded and rolled down her exposed body. Lips trembling, a shiver shook her. “I’m leaving tomorrow.”

She bent over and retrieved her jeans. Her movements were sharp and clipped. With a wiggle, she struggled to get them over her wet hips.

“Just forget I was ever here.” With a swipe of her hand, she grabbed her T-shirt off the ground and shook the sand out of it. Buried beneath the shirt now over her head, she grumbled, “Merry Christmas, Dean.”

Her wet hair immediately dampened the cloth and made the material almost transparent, outlining her taut nipples.

Reaching for his jeans, he heard the Jeep door moan as she yanked open the driver’s door and climbed inside. He hopped on one foot trying to get to her and simultaneously put his damn pants on. Jeans up one leg, he caught the door before she closed it.

Dean leaned over her and snatched the keys from the ignition. She wasn’t going anywhere, especially without him.

Lori leveled him with a heated glare. “Give me the keys.”

With his body, he jarred the door open. He raised his unclothed leg and crammed it into his pants, pulling them just up to his hips. She lunged for the keys. He jerked his hand and held the keys high above his head, barely escaping her grasp.

“Get out. I’ll drive.” Still holding the keys away from her with his free hand, he eased his semi-erect cock into his jeans.
